This was a gentle read but with heavy themes. I found the pacing to be slow and the book was longer than it needed to be. I did feel like I was pushing through just to get it finished.
I enjoyed the development of Charlie and Fran’s relationship and the element of coming-of-age. It’s written very nostalgically and did make me chuckle a few times.
I really struggled with Charlie’s mum. To me, she was the villain of this story. I did have empathy for Charlie’s dad but I felt that Charlie was abandoned by the adults in his life when he needed them most.
I struggled to separate some of the characters within the drama club - they all merged into one annoying, pretentious actor.
I didn’t find the narrator to be poor as others have.
Overall, not a bad read, but a bit of a slog.

Coming of age story that deals with the daily difficulties of depression, a bit of romance and Shakespeare. Other themes include the challenges of not having enough money and how your values and choices change because of circumstances. Also Good references to jazz music.

This book had me glued to it for a couple of chapters, then I could barely finish two sentences, and back at it.

pretty mid to be fair, although I liked the ending, but it was awfully slow and repetitive
