Toni Morrison’s Beloved follows a family of formerly enslaved black people post-American Civil War. The house they live in is haunted by a spirit that seemingly comes back to life. The thing I like about this story is that you can’t possibly see the full picture until the end, because it isn’t written in a linear structure, rather the story goes back and forth between different points of time and jumps from various points of view. My favourite character is Denver and my least favourite character is Schoolteacher. I recommend this book because I think it explores a really important theme around motherhood, slavery, and morals. It is a really beautifully written book, especially with the monologues and the closing chapter. ‘Sweet, crazy conversations full of half sentences, daydreams and misunderstandings more thrilling than understanding could ever be.’

Incredibly difficult to read at times, but that’s the point of a lot of good books. Sometimes you need to read things that make you uncomfortable and horrified. This book is a masterpiece, Toni is brilliant, and everything she writes is a work of art.
