Breathtakingly relevant

I felt like she touched on my own story without knowing me, and that of many others throughout the African diaspora, and poetry with the ability to do that is poetry for the soul.

So much pain in such a small space.

“You will come away bruised
But this will give you poetry.

The bruising will shatter.
The bruising will shatter into
black diamond.
No one will sit beside you in class.
Maybe your life will work.
Most likely it won’t at first
But that
Will give you poetry.”

Thank you Joe, first and foremost, for passing along this collection of poems to me. Oh how you know me so well. Ten years of friendship does that sometimes.

Thank you Yrsa, second but not far behind, for writing your heart, and mine, out on the page. This is the first day of the rest of my life with these poems. Until I give the collection away, but then they will still live in my mind.

I’ve already got someone in mind to pass this collection on to. I know he’ll have different favorites than me, but I can’t wait to hear which ones are his.

Really solid. I loved at least half of this collection. Bone, Battle, A Test, Who was doing what and where, and Quirk stand out the most for me.

Marta said” Bone will hit hit you like a gut punch” and I have no other better description. I had no expectations for this one but my mind is blown. Telling a story in a different way but intense and beautiful
