What a fantastic story! I loved learning about this self-taught master of music. Esquivel! Space-Age Sound Artist was a colorful and charming explosion of information about a very intriguing man. This book will hold much appeal for young minds.

I had never heard of Esquivel! before, so this was interesting. The same illustrator did work on Separate is Never Equal and the illustrations were so similar I struggled to separate the two for some reason. I still enjoyed this though. Read for Info Books for Youth for Grad School.

Juan Garcia Esquivel was a self-taught musical child prodigy. He figured out how to disable the mechanism on the player piano in his house so that he could play it himself. By age seventeen he was already the bandleader of an orchestra for a comedy show at a radio station and quickly became an innovator in stereophonic sound.

A great book for music lovers of all ages.

Read my entire review on my blog.

My students begged me to read this book.⁣

It's been hanging out in our reading area for weeks and several students confronted me this week asking when we would read it.

I highly recommend listening to music by Esquivel while reading this book. His music had such an interesting sound and I think it helped enhance the reading experience.

I love the surprise of the new, so I took a chance on this book about a musician from Mexico who revolutionized modern music. And yet, I have never heard of him.

Apparently he was quite popular in the 1950s, and did things with music that are considered avant garde even today.

The illustrator drew from the Mixtec code of the 14th century to create the style that he used for this book.

I love the there are picture books out there exploring people that were famous at the time, and have faded in history. I love that not all history is about rich, white, powerful men. I love that there is room for picture books about a boy from Mexico who learned music on his own, with no formal instruction.

Thanks to NetGalley for providing this book for an honest review.

Read for Librarian Book Group

Never has the use of an exclamation point in a book title been more appropriate.

Very cute biography about Juan Esquivel and his music from the 50s-60s. You should listen to it on audiobook because they play some of his music too. Or check him out on Spotify :)
