Such an interesting idea for a book - I've never read one quite like it. I recommend it, and the whole series.

****SPOILERS****

But I have to admit to being a little annoyed that there's very little payoff to the romantic storyline that built across the previous two books. It seems strange to me that we barely see the wedding and spend probably a grand total of five pages in the entire book with Alec. There was so much about the specific wedding day and the Blessing...and then nothing when they actually got married. I wonder if she means to write another book after this, because the story doesn't quite seem over yet, especially with Kim's run-in with Ruli and her promise to push Ruli into the sunlight if she goes evil.

This would have been five stars except for two things - first that my attention was often lost, even though I was thoroughly enjoying it, and second because of the disjointed feeling of the beginning and end from the rest of the book, and this book from the first two. Other than those items, I really enjoyed it.

I wish this site had ratings out of ten or half stars. Because while I loved this book I didn't love it as much as the previous two.

Sherwood Smith is as brilliant as always, but I think this story would have been significantly much more enjoyable without Kim as a middleman.

my only problem with the three books in these series are the last chapters, i don't like it's like people saying goodbye here, they say goodbye and then stand on the street for 5 minutes saying really nothing but not going away!!!

Starts off really slow, and then they get to France. And then I stayed up until 3:15am to try and finish it.

This series took a strange turn after [b:Coronets and Steel|7830913|Coronets and Steel (Dobrenica, #1)|Sherwood Smith|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1348532088s/7830913.jpg|10893363]. Throw in some vampires and lots of folklore for [b:Blood Spirits|11949708|Blood Spirits (Dobrenica, #2)|Sherwood Smith|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1328348943s/11949708.jpg|15234224], and add lots of ghosts, time travel, and mysticism for this one.

It ended up being a page-turner, but the premise was a little too fantastic for my tastes. What I LOVED though, was being able to revisit Paris and Vienna. World building has always been a great strength of Sherwood Smith's, and taking us to Napoleonic Europe was no exception. Having the modern-day cities fresh in my mind definitely helped, and I wonder how alive the story would feel to someone unfamiliar with the geography. Similarly, I suspect a fair amount of the Napoleonic political intrigue was lost on me but would be picked up by someone with more knowledge of that era. The same could be said for the Caribbean part of the story.

In short, I loved the settings but didn't really like this as the final book of a trilogy.
