An Outsiders retelling written by the author of Moxie? Yes please. Picking this up, I thought it would be a vague retell influence, just set in the same class battle. But no it was especially a carbon copy, just gender-flipped and dealing with other issues from the 60’s like sexism and racism. Did I spend the entire book guessing who the Johnny and the Daley were so I could prepare myself? Yes, yes I did. But dang, this was a great book.

This may be a gender-bend reimagining of The Outsiders set in the 60s, but the most telling aspect of the story is that much of it could remain true today. Double standards, murder in self-defense, women expected to 'act like a girl' and any form of emotional vulnerability is inherently at the fault and detriment of the girl in question. Now, if you're familiar with the original text, you know things only get worse. But along the way unlikely friendships blossom, and these relationships will change the lives of all of those involved. I liked how it twisted the original story into a tale that felt timeless and kept me really engaged the whole time.

Set in 1964, this young adult novel covers female friendships and expectations. These tough friends  look out for each other...even when tragedy strikes. The characters are great, the plot intense, and the friendships amazing. Occasionally Mathieu strikes her message a little hard.  Thanks to the publisher and Edelweiss for an advanced digital copy.
