I thought that if I started reading a book I would fall asleep, ended up reading this the whole way through. Shan has the gift of writing stories aimed at teens that are still mature in their themes in a way adults can appreciate as well. My memory is a bit rusty on his other books, but I think The Thin Executioner builds upon already stellar storytelling and has the most nuanced takes of what I have read from Shan thus far. There are few authors I enjoyed as an 11 year old that I equally adore as a 20 year old.

His Demonata series is my favorite, and I read about half of the Zom-B books that I now plan to get back into. Cirque Du Freak next! But, this is an excellent stand-alone and it’s best you go in blind.

Bought this book to read it for the second time. A wonderful story of a boy who goes on a journey/quest not just in the physical sense but also, a journey on which he discovers a lot about himself and the people around him. There were some lovely twists and turns and the story was very enjoyable to read.
Love this book by one of my favourite authors.

3.5 stars. The start was so slow but once it got going i was really good. However, the end was a little bit off. And I don't how to explain it was off but it was off.

The Thin Executioner is Darren Shan's re-imagining of Huckleberry Finn, in a far different world than Mark Twain would have ever written in. With that being said, This book was fantastic. I've read Huckleberry Finn, and have never fallen in love with it. While this book had similar characters to a point, and similar happenings to a point, it really was a far different story with a far different point than Huckleberry Finn. Jebal grows up, and learns that he was wrong, he matures and you really get to see him do that over the course of the book. Where Finn is all about the Freedom and being free while being on the river and being tied down while on the ground, The Thin Executioner is about judging, and learning that just because there are legends doesn't mean they are true. Jebel gets to learn that his teachers and his elders were wrong and are wrong and he gets to come to that realization over this year long journey. It is a fantastic journey full of evil and great characters who are running from or to something. I would have to say that this is Shan's best work, I know that he usually likes to split stories up into several books (Cirque Du Freak was like 13 books or something like that), But he did a fantastic job of keeping it all together in one.
