This is my favourite book of 2024 so far. Funny, touching and insightful.

Humans described from the point of view of an alien from a planet where mathematics and logic rule all.

“If you came to earth looking for logical sense you were missing the point, you were missing lots of things”

Meh. I was really expecting this book to be beautiful and profound. I got that from The Midnight Library, another of Haig’s books, but I can’t say I got that here. The Humans felt much more cliché, repetitive, and I hate to say it, but elementary. I don’t feel like it did anything that hadn’t been done before, and honestly at points it felt like a college level creative writing project. I love the message (that it hammers into you) of humans being perfectly imperfect, and that every second of life is a gift, and the mundane is beautiful and we take everything for granted. That’s all nice and fine, but it wasn’t anything new. I felt satisfied with the third act, and left the book on a high note, but overall it fell quite short.

I understand the point of this book but I don’t like philosophical novels.. I really prefer the non-fiction writing from Matt Haig..

After this book, I definitely want to read more from Matt Haig. It was everything at once: funny, sad, touching, and really interesting.
