As someone who grew up reading and watching Naruto's anime and manga, I was definitely excited to see what these spin-off light novels were about. When it comes to Itachi, he's probably one of my favorite characters in the series, so I had high expectations. I'd say the novel lived up to it's name. I really enjoyed how we got even more detail regarding Itachi's story. Obviously, some of the events were covered in the anime, but I loved how we got to see things that weren't shown. In addition, we see it directly from Itachi's perspective, rather than an outsider looking in. I think that aspect really made the difference, and it gave me even more respect for him as a character.

it wasn’t a bad read, however, it was definitely a slow burn.

itachi will remain one of my all-time favorite anime characters, and i will always believe that he definitely deserved better. but when reading some of his backstory (which has already been aired in the anime), i thought that we would receive a better view into the enigma shinobi.

when reading daylight, itachi came off more as robotic (and maybe this is the way that the writers wished to convey how troubled itachi truly felt as a child). he was, after all, a child prodigy. and due to the prejudice and discrimination that his village was constantly served, with his father being the head of the village as well as working in Leaf Village’s military police force, it’s not wonder itachi came off as distant.

my overall rating for this first half is 3 stars. i am looking to forward to reading midnight. however, this first installment did leave me feeling a tad bit lackluster.
