A solid academic analysis of romances, specifically Harlequin and Mills & Boon romances. I'm an avid romance reader, but I never really picked up Harlequins, and the only romance author I really recognized was Jennifer Cruisie (though I did recognize some critics like Bruno Bettelheim and Jack Zipes). I absolutely loved Chapter 1 on Northrop Frye's Mimetic Modes (I'm a structuralist at heart) and also really enjoyed Chapter 4's work on metaphors, even though it was limited primarily to house and gardening/flower metaphors (and I wanted more. I hadn't read any of the HM&B books she analyzes, but that didn't take away from the effectiveness of her analysis, and I found I could apply it directly to romances I had read. I would recommend for those who are looking for an analytical take on romances (or for avid romance readers).
