I LOVE generational sagas, but this one didn't hit the way I thought it would hit. The thing is, I really enjoyed this story, but didn't like how the author wrote it. It was too hard to follow and keep up with the different perspectives (probably because each of the character's perspectives sounded the exact same) and it was a lot of jumping back and forth throughout the timeline. There's also some holes in the plot that I wish were answered better, but without giving too many spoilers I won't get too into that. I do think that this is a very, very hyped up book that was just "okay" to me.

This was not the gentle feel-good intergenerational novel I thought it was going to be lol. I mean, failure on my part; I didn't look up what it was about, read no reviews. So with that in mind, I was somewhat unprepared for how it all unfolded. Each chapter has truly beautiful prose, astonishing atmosphere... and a rib cracking gut punch reveal. It's huge, full of intimate details and violence. Two moments of clunky exoposition which didn't seem to fit in with the otherwise naturalistic dialogue.

I think the best way to approach this story is to frame it as a modern fairytale of sorts. The woods are dark and deep but glimmers of light shine through.
