Very captivating story between two royals town between kingdoms. The main princess torn between the needs of her kingdom, a spicy romantic love interest, and standing true to her own self. The ending takes an intruder twist, but ultimately is a perfect ending for this type of story.

I struggle through the first half because I found it boring and I couldn't even remember what happened once I finished the page however I pressed on and it got really good in the last half. It was much more exciting and interesting so if you can make it to about page 50 it gets so much better.

I really liked the writing style, the concept and the world presented, however it felt a bit rushed and underdeveloped, mostly with regards to the romance. I feel like with maybe 50 pages more it would have worked for me better, as the characters and relationships felt too surface-level for me to care. Still, a very enjoyable read of filial obedience and defiance, toxic love, manipulation, political intrigues and emotional strength.

I think it's safe to say I really enjoy de Bodard's writing.
This was glorious, I wish there was more.

I was enthralled by the Vietnamese inspired setting of "Fireheart Tiger" described in the synopsis and by the time I got to the promise of a sapphic romance I was sold. Sadly I didn't enjoy it as much as I'd hoped to.

It was difficult to connect to many of the characters, such are the consequences of a novel which is not fully fledged and relationships are established off the page. Giang was a very interesting character yet her character wasn't explored nearly as much as I'd hoped. The love triangle in this novella was quite insubstantial and overshadowed much of the lush worldbuilding, political intrigue and important themes such as the impact of colonialism.

I think that the potential was definitely there yet aspects where simply not fleshed out as much as they could've been if this novella was longer. There were enjoyable moments and the writing was quite lovely but as a whole I wanted a bit more in terms or character development and worldbuilding.
