I only finished this because it was so short. I loved the setting and felt like this would have been better as a novel. The protagonist made unbelievably poor choices, all of the characters were disappointingly flat,  and the plot just kind of ended because the author needed it to end. The romance ending was a bit creepy too. I would not recommend this book.

This feels like a prince of a larger novel but one that I would enjoy.

Beautifully written, fabulous characterisation, detailed world building. Lots of things I love, but it is also tense epic fantasy politics, and really it doesn't matter the quality of anything, I just don't love the sub-genre. So, lots of great scenes, and the plot holds together fabulously, but there were moments where I wasn't sure I was going to finish the book in one sitting.

As well as the politics, there are darker aspects of a family relationship (our protagonist, Princess Thanh, has a difficult relationship with their mother, the Empress), manipulating 'romantic' relationships, and what is possibly best described as hostage negotiation.

I wish the author would have gone into a bit more detail with Giang, but a beautiful story.

None of the characters were likeable or had any sense of growth, the plot was a jumbled mess at best with little background to the intesne political issues happening in the book. There wasn't enough detail and the story continously jumped from present to past in the middle of paragraphs. The story lacked cohesiveness. While I already typically dislike love-triangles, I absolutely despised the one happening in this story. There was also the very jarring scene of domestic abuse which was also poorly written. So much of the world was made up and based off of other things in real life but there was no explaination as to how these things changed between reality and fiction. Overall, both the story and characters were incredibly poorly written.

I love the relationships this author writes. I think I prefer the sci-fi mystery stuff I've read by her, but this was a really satisfying read.
