Fantastic read that includes both analytical articles and narrative short stories about the art, science and struggle of translation. Living in my third country, and dabbling in the fifth and sixth languages I dabble in, this provided useful and interesting insights to a more formal process of translation than I have engaged in. Included is this observation: Seamus Heaney writes in the introduction to his translation of Beowulf: "It is one thing to find lexical meanings for the words... but it is quite another thing to find the tuning fork that will give you the note and pitch for the overall music of the work." Perfect.
The stories were more uneven for me, each provided new angles on the challenges of translation, including the critical aspect of understanding and incorporating the cultures of both the original work and that of the language into which it is being translated. Translation is treason. (or the various translations of that phrase.) Avoiding treason can be tough.
