I love the author’s Cathedral Lake series, so I was delighted to discover this novella that takes a look at an unexpected Christmas encounter for Ben Lydon. Ben is a complex character and the encounter he has with his ex-wife on Christmas is no less complex. Although short, the story does a great job of setting up what Ben is feeling on this particular Christmas. The night time setting, the snow swirling outside, his mood as the fire crackles in the hearth—it’s all atmospheric, and the perfect lead in to Mia’s arrival. The setting almost feels like a character itself.

You don’t have to be familiar with the author’s Cathedral Lake series to follow the events in this novella. It’s a short Christmas interlude easily read in one sitting and a great introduction to Ben.
