Foi uma daquelas histórias que custou bastante a entrar, mas assim que o comboio encarrilou não descansei enquanto não o acabei. Por vezes perturbador, não só porque se passa durante o início da segunda guerra mundial, mas também porque relata uma história de amor atípica.

It is a very well-constructed novel, under all aspects. It is breathtaking, sad, wild, joyful, at the same time "saucy" and "sweet".

It is a bit of slow-starting book, but because I listened to the audiobook, I thoroughly enjoyed this slow pace. It is apparent throughout the book that the author has done considerable research, because it is very historically accurate, and more importantly, the author has used this historical accuracies to weave in a complicated, multi-threaded story which comes together quite neatly. It should be noted that the text is heavy on Jewish mysticism which only serves to add to the magical feel to it. What I enjoyed most about this book, I think, is that it expressed the many intricate socio-economic issues during Weimar Republic's collapse and during Hitler's rise to power; it is the story of humans rather than of politics that prevails in this piece of fiction.

This is quite a long book and I felt it almost overstaying its welcome. However, I loved Richard Zimler's writing style. There are some images he created in my mind which may stay with me forever.
