I enjoyed the prose and the dark magical realism, but in the end, it felt like a whole bunch of empty nothing and left me feeling unsafisfied.

A chilling, gothic fable that draws you in and leaves you dangling on its hook right until the very end.

There were moments when shivers went down my spine and the prose was to die for. I love the fact that the author alluded to events but didnt always explicitly spell out the truth of them. It allowed my imagination to conjure up horrible ideas.

I must get copies of his previous work!!

Rural village is unwelcoming to troubled young family who go stirring up ancient curses.
So: what's new? Answer:Nothing. But Mr. Hurley writes from an engaging psychological perspective, unearthing the motivations behind actions with humanism front and center over the horror. As the story unrolls it is soothing and immersive while unease gradually creeps up.
The ability to start the story with the suspicion of evil, introduce paranormal folklore, and continuously ramp up the horror and dark content to an aberrant conclusion, is convincingly achieved in this novel. The suspense of lurking peril adding to an evil foreboding atmosphere is masterfully crafted by Hurley. The location is vividly portrayed with an air of warning hanging on every scene and the well-drawn characters fit the story perfectly (Juliette, whose mind is slowly slipping into madness and Richard feels of frustration and despair).
The only issue - for me-, it is that I expected a bit more horror or trauma from this story even though I appreciate the threat of horror is often greater than the horror itself.
