I drew cats with stars on their foreheads for quite a while after reading this. I really loved the story.

i love all of r.l. stine's book, and this is no exception. wendy takes a charm, against the wishes of the seller. what the seller warns her about is coming true! she tries to take the charm off, but can't. at the last moment, she finds the seller and she removes it. but it's too late for wendy, the transformation is complete.

Fear Street # 76

You know what? This one works, too. It's definitely more of a Goosebumps feeling book then anything seemingly related to the Fear Street franchise, but it worked for me.

Wendy Chapman is obsessed with cats. Her parents won't let her own one, but she collects anything and everything cat-related. Her fondness for cats gets her teased by the bully on her gymnastics team, but Wendy likes what she likes. When she goes to a Cat Show at the Division Street Mall with her best friend Tina, she falls in love with a cat pendant. The lady in the booth, however, tells her it's not for sale despite being in the $5 tray. Wendy is having none of that nonsense. When the woman's back is turned Wendy snatches the necklace and drops a $5 on the counter and books.

It turns out though that the lady's ramblings about the necklace being a werecat charm are true. Werecats are mortal enemies of cats and all the cats Wendy meets now hiss at her. At midnight that night, and every night after, Wendy changes. At first it seems like fun, but the novelty is wearing off and there are some serious consequences to being a giant cat on the mean streets of Shadyside. Can Wendy remove the curse?

This was...just fun.

We watched Fear Street 1994 on Netflix and then I saw this on my shelf of old childhood books and I had to.

I won't rate this because I think my rating now versus my rating if I read this as a kid would be totally different. I thought the structure of this was super smart - short chapters, all ending on cliffhangers, constant action. If I had a kid who had a hard time focusing, I would definitely put this in their hands. I had fun reading this before bed, and I really didn't guess the ending even now. Now I wish it was Halloween!

Wendy is an 11 year old girl who loves cats. One day after school, she goes with her best friend Tina to a cat show. While there, the 2 young girls make the acquaintance of Mrs. Bast, who is the owner of a charm necklace that enchants Wendy. She wants it so much and offers to buy it from Mrs. Bast. Mrs. Bast refuses to sell it, warning Wendy of the powers the charm has. But Wendy is undeterred and seizes her chance when Mrs. Bast is distracted, to gain possession of the charm. She takes the charm and leaves $5 as payment.

At home, Wendy puts the charm around her neck. It is not an ordinary charm with a symbol on it in the shape of a cat's head. At the stroke of midnight, Wendy transforms into a large werecat. She leaps out of the open bedroom window to the ground and runs on all-fours through the neighborhood.

"Night of the Werecat" is an interesting story. Wendy again turns into a large cat the next night. In her human form, Wendy is anxious to get the charm off her neck. But - she is not able to REMOVE it. Oh no! Wendy is now locked in a struggle between her human and feline selves, with the latter self increasingly growing in influence with each passing day. It looks like she will be a werecat for the rest of her life.

What next? Read the book to find out.
