This graphic adaptation isn't visually entrancing enough to justify how much of Bulgakov's gorgeous prose and skillful character development was left out. I was enticed by the idea of actually seeing the masterful imagery designed by Bulgakov, but I was disappointed not only by the quality of the illustrations, but also the inept job that these images do to tell the tale.

This was dead good! Super easy to read and a really awesome way of reminding myself of the novel without having to read the whole thing <3 Also I loved how Hella was drawn, she looked amazing.

I have mixed feelings about this adaptation.

I thought the art style was mostly suitable, although the choice to use black and white for the majority of the book makes some scenes a bit confusing. Since so much was cut from the original, some action passes with such quick pace that you might confuse what is going on, due to the lack of distinctiveness between characters. Overall though, I think the paintings evoke the mokd and time period quite well.

My biggest complaint is reserved for how condensed the story was, particularly the role of Woland's retinue. These characters are larger than life and jumped off the page without illustrations in the original. Here, they fall flat, particularly Behemoth, who is not once given a panel that appropriately references his gluttonous nature.

In general, the story whips by so fast that a lot of the richness from the original is wasted, particularly so, again, due to the choice to use a monochrome palette throughout. This should have really been twice the length.

An okay introduction to the chaos that Woland & Co. bring to Moscow in Bulgakov's masterpiece, but far from doing the source material justice.

I haven't read the actual novel this is based on, which is perhaps why I didn't fully grasp what was going on. I loved the art style, though (especially the changes between black and white and color), and perhaps more importantly, this really made me want to pick up the original novel.

Just arrived from USA through BM.

What to say about this book?

Bulgakov started to write this book in 1929. However, since he didn't believe in his future as a russian novelist, he simply burned the manuscript in 1930. A second draft was written in 1936 and the final version was completed only in 1940 just before his death.

The plot comprises two stories: in the first one, Voland who is visited by the Devil; the second one is the re-creation tale of Christ facing his tormentor Pontius Pilate in a trial.

Several dramatizations were made based on this book: Pilatus und andere - Ein Film für Karfreitag (1972), directed by Andrzej Wajda, Il maestro e Margherita (1972), Master i Margarita (1994) and Mistrz i Malgorzata (1990).

Uno de los mejores libros que he leído en los últimos seis meses. Una auténtica obra maestra de la literatura universal. Pueden parecer palabras exageradas, pero de verdad que esta novela de Bulgakov se merece todos estos elogios y muchos más.

A brief and efficient adaptation of the complex novel. The art was a terrible mismatch for the story. Stick to the original and skip this one.
