Since the birth of our nation, we’ve been struggling with treating people less than human.

In some ways, the Civil War was a fight for our humanity, and it’s still impacting us today.

“At a time like this, scorching irony, not convincing argument, is needed…For it is not light that is needed, but fire; it is not the gentle shower, but thunder. We need the storm, the whirlwind, and the earthquake.”     -Frederick Douglass

I originally bought this when I was trying to figure out how to lay out my memoir, thinking this would have some sort of visual timeline. That wasn’t the case, but it is a good graphic history of what happened during one of the many dark histories of our nation.

Great use of newspaper style writing and then graphic storytelling to give personal stories .. powerful book of history that seems pretty balanced ...

Very nice exploration of the war. By the title you can tell it is not a depiction of the War of the Succession of the Southern States, but that is okay too from my perspective.

I had to read this for a class I took at university. I found it simplistic and not very interesting.

I don't think reading this book taught me anything new about the Civil War. I was hoping for more depth and meaning behind it. Wasn't there

A great, emotionally heavy read about the civil war. This book isn't an in-depth look at the civil war, mainly due to it being a graphic novel. Yet each chapter goes into a subject during the conflict with great detail, more so than I expected. The art is simplistic yet deeply moving and the writing is strong. This is a compelling, smart graphic novel that doesn't sugarcoat the events that happened during the civil war. Highly recommend it.

As others have pointed out, broad events and ideas stay in introductory paragraphs, while the graphic novel portion focuses on small, personal stories. This is a great and well-researched way to show the war, the politics, and the reactions of regular people. Many of these stories are inspired by real people and their accounts. I just wish they spent more time in the back of the book explaining which accounts are directly quoted and which they've taken "artistic liberty" with. They use so many great sources I would like to know which sources provided stories for which chapters. Which characters quote primary sources and which characters are put together from many?

Such a good graphic novel and impressively well researched. Probably one of the best graphic novels I've ever read. The ways they use the drawings to explain historical events is so interesting and refreshingly new. Devoured it in one sitting, highly highly recommend.
