I ADORED this so much!!! I officially feel like a birder upon reading this.
The pacing, facts, and overal organization of content kept me interested and in awe throughout the whole book.
I also really appreciated how it was written as sometimes with animal/nature books I can become lost and overwhelmed by a vast amount of unfamiliar terms without prior knowledge. There are also many beautiful black and white photos and diagrams throughout. I can't recommend this enough!

I really enjoyed this. It’s the kind of book to be savoured slowly, bit by bit, by people who enjoy pulling out heavy bird guides and learning about how this bird eats red berries which would make your lips pucker, and this bird likes to summer near blue-green beaches, while this other bird doesn’t appreciate squirrels but is cool sharing space with seed-eating chipmunks.

Only this is a bird guide that, instead of going bird by bird, explores the avian world through chapters with subtitles such as “How Birds Employ Their Sensory Abilities” and “Migration and Navigation in an Endless Sky”.

A deep curiosity about the natural world is a prerequisite for this one.

Full of interesting facts but mostly lacking in narrative structure.

A fascinating read for birders and non-birders alike. Highly informative, the book covers a range of biological and physiological topics, from feeding to flight.

Clearly written for an American audience, it only gives temperatures in Fahrenheit and speeds/distance in miles so readers may want to keep a conversion table on hand.

I did skip over the metabolic section as the numbers/maths was too difficult for me to follow, but that was a 'me' issue and not necessarily a failing of the book.

I really enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone with an interest in birds.

This book is definitely very science heavy, but so fun to learn more about birds!

I enjoyed this book but I read ed yong’s book before this and I must say the contrast makes me feel not so great about this. Still good though.
