These books always manage to strike a balance between inspiringly hopeful and optimistic - and *devastating* mass destruction and loss

A very investing story in grander scale than most Star wars novels. It's well written and the characters are pretty deep although it's hard to follow at times. I especially lost my immersion, when species were mentioned by name I never heard of instead of described.

This one has SPACE DRAGONS !!

I am loving the High Republic series so much. I didn’t enjoy this  quite as much as Light of the Jedi but I still had a good time.

There are about 15 too many characters. I’ve really grown to love some of them though 🥹
Elzar Mann in particular has become a favorite - I liked learning more about his friendship with Stellan (and Avar omg tea). So curious about where his relationship with Ty goes!! Plus Bell/Indeera/Loden and of course Kip/Jom (gay characters with “speaking” roles??? In Star Wars???? SLAY!!)

Excited to read the next one. This canon fan fiction has hooked me!

Going into this book, I had a lot of critiques about the portrayal of the Nihil as an analogue for anarchism as a political concept. Overall I found their development to not be as interesting as I was hoping for, and a strange turn from their portrayal in the first book. While I enjoyed some of  Marchion Ro's characterization in the first book, this one did away with any truly threatening scenes of him for me. Additionally, illuminating how his powers of the path work made them a little less interesting to me. The characters from the republic that were focused on were also not the ones I was most excited about.  Bell Zettifar had an interesting arc, but with the breadth of characters, I feel like he kind of got lost, as did Burryaga.
In the first book, I really enjoyed the characterization of Loden Greatstorm, and was EXTREMELY disappointed with how he was used. I feel like Bell cutting himself off from the force was a very thin thread and did not pay off well when Loden died.
I did REALLY LIKE Bell's therapy fire dog, to put it as bluntly as possible.

Almost a DNF, but glad I stuck it out. Some interesting things happening with Elzar Mann and Marchion Ro, which makes me excited to keep reading.
