Absolutely moving book of poetry. Dark, hopeful, inspiring.

this was a raw and vulnerable poetry collection about sexual assault, generational trauma, and the indigenous identity. i found many of the poems heartbreaking but raw and they definitely stood out. i would read more poetry from wilkins.

representation: Indigenous Author/Narrator

content warnings:

“How do I love the parts
of me that
I don’t even like the sight
of?
What I see in my mist-
filled bathroom mirror
may differ from what
others see.”

“I promise if you bare me
your soul,
I won’t see your rawness
as ugly or weak,
but as wonder and
strength.”

The writing in this can really only be described in few ways that are true: powerful, beautiful, and lyrical.

Even if you aren’t Indigenous, there will be a poem in here that will speak to you.

I enjoyed these short easy to read poems. My favorites being Letter to a Flower, Pipe Ceremony, Unhinged and It Wasn’t Your Fault. I wish to see more depth and a bigger collection from this author in the near future!
