It's really impossible to read amazing spiderman without peter parker title as well, because even if there is no tie in events, important things happen in peter parker that get mention in amazing Spider-man, like the situation we have with Venom which is a major villain.
Also put yourself in place of readers of that age, i am pretty sure i have a few of them in my friendlist on goodreads.
You like spiderman it won't be enough to just read 25 pages monthly for the character, so they make a second series now you have 50 pages monthly of the same title, and it still honestly wouldn't be enough, look at me i don't read that many comics lately and i read 13 issues i think since start of this year of Spider-man.
Anyway, turns out the crazy calls were directed at MJ, someone thinks she is his, and he will kill Peter to get her.
Meanwhile it seems someone is killing everyone that was present at the experiment of doctor oak, only Spider-man and that Jonathan rickman are left.

Speaking of Jonathan rickman, don't we have a comic book writer called Jonathan Hickman
