The majority of complaints I've heard about this book lament that it's "outdated," or "so basic/obvious that you can't learn anything from it." But I don't think Sun Tzu's purpose of writing was to teach. I think it was meant to be a springboard for strategy. As in, "here are your staples and some fundamental principles laid out before you. Consider all of these elements at once and apply them as necessary to your situation." Sure, society has changed, there's hardly a spot on the world map that remains blank, there is more to consider nowadays... much like there are more than 5 musical notes. Or, in fact, more than 5 degrees of music scale! But the foundational theories still apply. The prose doesn't dwell much on laying out examples of concepts, so sometimes my imagination would run wild with scenarios and possibilities instead of paying attention to the next paragraph, and I'd have to backtrack quite often. Overall I'm glad I read The Art of War. I'm excited to explore the dupes and parodies and offshoots it inspired.

Whether people want to admit it or not, we’re in battle every day. Might as well get some insights into winning.
