Bang average really. If I didn't know/live/work by Rutland Water I wouldn't find it half as interesting I don't think. Spent half the time waiting for another niche reference I'd get, and the fun from that wore off quickly. Randomly shoe horning info into the convo was also just a bit unnecessary at times.

Just looking at the plot, quick read and very easy to take in. Not a lot differentiating it from other small town crime mysteries thoygh

I was born and grew up in a Rutland village, and my family still live in Oakham, so was interested to dive into this series. This first one was okay, but I think it was merely the familiar locations and mentions that kept me reading. Not a fan of the main character and the plot was pretty weak in my opinion. Reviews for the second one look better so maybe I'll give it a go sometime.

What Lies Beneath - Adam Croft
Narrated by Andy Nyman

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for a fair review thanks to W.F. Howes Ltd and Netgalley.

A peaceful Sunday morning in Rutland is shattered when a dead body is discovered on the rocks at Normanton Church.

The victim has been laid out in a crucifixion pose, facing the altar. DI Caroline Hills is certain there’s a religious connection — one which threatens the tranquility of life in the area.

The killer has gone to extraordinary lengths to make the symbolism clear. And the deaths will continue until Caroline and DS Dexter Antoine uncover the truth behind the dark secret — and what lies beneath.

This is a well written, concise book with a well developed plot. Throughout the investigation there is a side story, where Caroline is hiding a secret from her family and colleagues, which just adds to the mystery.

I thought the only downside to this book was the lack of character development, but this does not detract from the story and I look forward to the character development throughout the series.

I listened to this book in one sitting as it is a quick listen and the story is gripping.

Rating 4/5

From the first instalment, this sounds like it going to be an interesting series

The book was okay. I started this during vacation before a flight and overall it was good. Not too hard to read, plot was generally okay, nothing too stretched out. I just wish the ending wasn't so cliche with her going in alone to confront the double murderer. Also, as much as the characters were meant to be shaped, they felt very flat and one-sided, which took away from the story in my opinion. I definitely think this book is worth a read, just not my taste.
