Reading this after watching the movie feels like drinking water in a desert. It's fast but mysterious and uses some art style choices I don't quite understand (like putting dark shadows over the characters as they're talking making them appear a bit scary when all they're doing is sitting in the shade?). So.. solid story, wish it was a little more substantial.

Somehow M. Night Shyamalan made it better?

I read this after watching Old hoping it would be different or reveal something the movie lacked. This just left me feeling confused, like I missed something. Such a good premise but needed longer to flesh it out better.

watched the shyamalan movie and it sucked, so i decided to read the graphic novel. it was surprisingly good, poignant and thoughtful. it doesn't waste time answering that which doesn't need to be answered because the whys aren't the main point here, but the way the story presented is a microcosm of life and death itself. existentialism goes brrrr.

My partner and I have a bad habit of watching M Night Shymalan's movies.  We know we don't like his work anymore. . . we just want to be set up for the stupid twist and see the stupid twist.  And we've seen all the episodes of The Twilight Zone!

However, I don't know if I can do it anymore.  Someone needs to stop giving this man money!!  (Including us, though we're a drop in the bucket!)  Maybe my tolerance has gone down over time, but I felt that the writing of "Old" almost could not be worse.  Why are all the characters just yelling everything that happens instead of it being shown???  Horrible acting, horrible shots, bad score, and racist also.  And M. Night, through much of his body of work, spreads EXTREME misinformation about mental health conditions.  I think it borders on hate speech, honestly.

Anyway, the way this relates to my review is that I heard that "Old" was based on a graphic novel, and I thought the idea had potential in graphic novel form.  I decided to check it out. . . I did NOT like it!!  Sad to report that this version was also racist, and even more misogynistic?  Did not like the art style at all, did not care for the way the story was presented.  Bad stuff!  We need V.C. Andrews back among us to write one of the particularly shocking and gross twists in a way that we could also kinda enjoy in its horror.

I'm making a lot of bad book choices lately.
