A powerful novel based on a war I had little knowledge about. I found it a captivating read despite the fairly frequent painful passages. The author does not sugar-coat her scenes, nor try to protect the reader and I am grateful for this. The imagery used to describe both the wonder and the horror of the island at this time completely transported me, I could almost taste the exotic food, feel the fear of the people.

This book will stay with me for some time.
