I knew I wanted to read it. It was in my tbr but then I started listening to the Audiobook, and it was magic. I was completely hooked the first chapter in, this was intriguing and stories in a story. Kovthe’s has so much depth to him, we aren’t even finished with his story yet! I found Denna abit boring to be honest and Fela was more interesting. Kovthe’s childhood and the Chandrian killing his troupe that was excellently written. And how Kovthe survived by himself for months in the woods, how important music was in his life. How he lived on the streets and was so clever that he got into the university! And all the things he did and discovered while he was there. I can’t wait to read the second book, might just Audiobook it.

Nothing new here. Rothfuss is probably capable of writing a great fantasy novel someday, but this isn't it. There are plenty of ingredients from the Generic shelf, although I admit it's hard to write in this genre without that.

When the hero can do anything after ten minutes' study, and can always get out of trouble even without the ten minutes, where's the suspense? Kvothe is a Mary Sue, and this is pulp fiction from the "mighty thews" era.

The Ambrose/Hemme thread is way, way too much like Malfoy/Snape.
The women are just plain unbelievable.
The drooling, worshipful friends are hard to swallow, too.

I just about gave up when he borrowed 5 times his credit limit, bought a horse - did I mention he's also an expert horse whisperer, evaluator and buyer? Then rode off without telling anyone, rode 65 miles and walked 5, then had time left in the day for enough action to fill three days.

No copy editor, either. (Parent's) for (parents'), (lead) for (led), and several other repeated misuses of homonyms and other grade-school errors.

The loopy professor is about all that kept me going. Don't know if I'll read the second, knowing that there will also be 700 pages of #3 to wade through before I find out how it all fits together.

This was one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. I’d put it on level with Harry Potter for me of all time favorites. It’s not warm and fuzzy but it’s an adventurous heroic book that never gets boring. Definitely will be continuing the series ✨

Loved it! I like the writing; I like the characters and story. Enjoyable and compelling. But WHY do I keep getting addicted to series that are unfinished! It is killing me. This one has a #2 I've ordered, but apparently he's been working on #3 for a LONG time. So add that to the list along with whatever comes after Oathbringer.... I need to get addicted to "old" already-finished series. :)

While I really enjoyed parts of this book; such as the classic fantasy tavern setting which felt like it was straight out of D&D, and was very invested in Kvothe's emotions towards the Chandrian, I felt like these good points ultimately fell flat when most of the book's time was spent in the University and not really progressing Kvothe's story beyond that. This book felt like a very long 700 pages and I had trouble finishing it when I realized that this was all we were going to get.

I'm sure (kind of) that the second book picks up the story more, but with the third book being nowhere in sight I will leave it at this for now.

Started for book club but didn’t have time to finish. May return to it another time.
