I loved Cassie and Walter. The geology was great to read about--I picked up a few facts about gold deposits and historical mining in California.
The pacing was very fast, sometimes too much so. Dialog was occasionally choppy and disjointed as a result. I also would have liked an explanation for why Gail was so crazypants. I don't think we ever got one, and that was kind of weird.
Not a perfect book, but fun and interesting enough to continue reading the series at some point. Wonderful main characters--I'm very interested to read about Walter's mentioned lady friend.

I am always up for a good mystery, plus I love it when a story integrates some good science. This book has potential but it tried a bit too hard to blend the two.

2.5 stars. A pair of forensic geologists are hired to try and find the gold from a rock specimen left by a Grandfather to his Grandson. Not a very well written story - confusing at times.

Toni Dwiggin's Forensic Geology series is a delightful read for anyone with any interest in geology - this prequel novella is no exception. Well written, suspenseful.. A true page turner. I love that the geology terms are authentic and used properly, and I love that Toni uses them in a way that adds to the excitement without bogging it down with hard science. It was a great set up for how the rest of the series is if you come to it new and start sequentially.
I left off a star simply because I felt the end came too abruptly. I really just wanted there to be more!
