Very interesting! I didn’t know much about the context of the story. At times it dragged a bit, but I enjoyed it overall!

Isabel Allende is clearly a superbly talented writer. Three stars for her skill! This was a sweeping story that covered political history in Spain as well as Chile, and I think that part, the emphasis on political regimes and shifts of power, that made it not so much for me. I enjoyed the parts that were about the characters and their lives, but of course, the political atmosphere, wars, and changes of power were the devices propelling the plot that impacted them. If you like political history, you should definitely try this book! Most of all, I appreciated the perspective I gained reading this, the recognition that people live through hardship the likes of which I have never had to experience.

I was instantly attached to these characters and invested in their happiness. I have always loved The House of the Spirits and Eva Luna for the curious cast of players and fantastical worlds they all live in. I wondered if I’d be just as enchanted with Allende’s more pure historical fiction, and I’m pleased to say that I am.
