Devastating, heartbreaking. Usually I avoid these books to protect my mental health, but I don’t know why I started reading this one. It was all fine and things I read before until Amal said her family was in Shatila in 1981. That’s when I knew what was about to go down. And although I expected it, it shocked and horrified and opened up my wounds anyways. “Is this what it means to be Palestinian?”

A heartbreaking story of generations of Palestinians. While fictional in name, the truth of this book is but a glimpse into the lives, love, trauma and resiliency of Palestinians under and in spite of Israeli oppression and violence.

‘ “The roots of our grief coil so deeply into loss that death has come to live with us like a family member who makes you happy by avoiding you, but who is still one of the family. Our anger is a rage that Westerners cannot understand. Our sadness can make the stones weep. And the way we love is no exception, Amal. “It is the kind of love you can know only if you have felt the intense hunger that makes your body eat itself at night. The kind you know only after life shields you from falling bombs or bullets passing through your body. It is the love that dives naked toward infinity’s reach. I think it is where God lives.”
In the long wait for one another and in the sacred love nestled in war, Yousef and Fatima had discovered this secret.’

I cried my eyes out reading this book. so profoundly moving.

Beautiful, enchanting and heartbreaking.. I love you Amal may your soul and all the souls of our martyrs rest in heaven.
My words cannot describe enough how beautifully this book is written
For those “zionist puppets” who say it’s full of anger and rage.. how about you live through only 1% of the hell Palestinian people live through every day to understand where is the fury and raw emotions are coming from..
I read this book shortly after the last war on Gaza in 2021 to educate myself more about my lost country and perhaps to give myself even more hope that one day we shall have our free Palestine back
