I believe this is an absolutely essential framework to keep track of if we are to realize the mistakes of the past, and the complex arrangements between capitalism and notions of evil. However, I was a little disappointed with the shortness of this book. There was diverse information on witch trials in Europe, but only a few mentions for the Americas. Which is strange, considering the title. I was hoping for a deeper dive into America's specific relationship to women and persecution. That being said, this book provided more than enough of a jumping-off point to do my own research. Definitely still an extremely valuable read that creates a helpful framework for looking at modern-day witch hunts and their causes on both sides of the political spectrum.

I underlined like half this book, straight fire, I learned so much. my fav takeaway is that there have ALWAYS been people resisting capitalism and the disciplining of the body since medieval times (women in particular were often at the forefront of these movements!) and Federici does such great justice to those rebels by telling their stories. it was pretty unclear to me before I started reading how witch hunts were as important to the formation of the world proletariat as land enclosures or slave trade or colonization of the New World, but by the end I understood that they were key in destroying the social power of women, placing the female body at the service of the production and reproduction of labor-power, forging bourgeois ideals of womanhood and domesticity, and breaking class solidarity. I hate to say it but we are the daughters of the witches they couldn’t burn fr….
Also! I learned so much about Marxist, Foucauldian, Cartesian, and Hobbesian theory by reading Federici’s critiques and I looooved how much medieval art was provided as evidence. Super super cool book, anyone interested in leftist literature should read

I was initially biased to like this book based on its core ideas. Its politics are also mostly aligned with mine, and it came very well recommended (which I find baffling, in retrospect). But there is just too much freestyling with history and cherry picking of data in here. Unearned, unconvincing and unsupported conclusions abound - never have I read a book where "citation needed" popped up in my head more often. And I just can't ignore those issues, even if I like what the author is trying to say.
Note:
For those interested in particulars, a very thorough analysis of the book, detailing its distortions and misrepresentations in a very persuasive and well documented way, can be found here.
