I did not find this book as good as The Bone House or the Jonathan Stride series. The chapter (albeit short) of graphic violence turned me off. A couple of "didn't see that coming" moments at the end.

3.6/5 stars. The political aspect of this book did nothing for me. Maybe it's because I am Canadian, but I really struggled with the fictitious Common Way political party. I almost abandoned this book multiple times, but I stuck with it because I quite liked the first book in the series, and I hoped the other elements of the story would overtake the political ones. They did, and I am glad I persevered.

Much to like about this book: Great concept for a political thriller--who really killed the gubernatorial candidate and why? Likeable characters: Cab Bolton is a solid MC even though he's not fully the central focus of this story. But the supporting cast is intriguing: Peach Piper, the political researcher whose brothers are important players in the book; Tarla Bolton, Cab's mother and flighty retired movie star who gets off numerous one-liners at mostly Cab's expense; and Caprice, a friend of the widow of the slain candidate and brains behind the political machine that seeks to establish a third party as a legitimate player in statewide politics. All are well-drawn people who are the heroes/heroines in their own particular stories within this story.

Freeman is a top-flight storyteller and craftsman who tells a great story that maintains suspense and building tension from page one until the end. There are several well-done twists at the end that I didn't see coming and one that I vaguely suspected would play out.

Other than being a little bit slow near the end (epilogue), this is an excellent thriller.

It held my attention and for awhile I actually got caught up in the story and fell for some red herrings. Brian Freeman writes great suspense novels!

Cab is back! He's investigating a threat made to his mother Tarla's best friend Diane. Diane is running for governor and there are all sorts of sordid happenings that happened 10 years previous, including the murder of her husband right in front of her. Cab starts untangling a murky web of deceit, political players, a new political party, and new threats. Along the way he & Lala run into some relationship problems, along with his hit or miss relationship with his mother. New evidence, new murders, and a new players find their way into the mix. Interesting twists and more info on Cab's background round the story out. Can't wait for the next book

Enjoyable read. Plenty of intrigue and political dirty tricks. Perhaps too many characters to keep track of, but a good story with lots of surprises.

I listened to this on audiobook. The Cab Bolton series is just such fun. I use this for morning run listening/reading and they are perfect for it. There is a nice balance of action/mystery/humor/sassiness, etc. I do think the first book was slightly stronger, but only because the first book's plot centered around whether a husband was guilty of several horrible things and the wife was one of two main characters (besides the detective Cab Bolton). This book didn't have quite have that level of tension, but there was still plenty of suspense and action. I completely recommend this series for a fun action mystery with some adult themes (nothing bad at all). Happy reading!
