This book is just awesome. The things I enjoyed the most? I loved that it was written from the Zombie's perspective....that there were still people inside! Cool. I liked that different people and their experiences were the focus of each part of the book...sometimes I like that better than one central character. It gives insight into how this is effecting each of them...what they miss about being human...how they feel about their zombie fate, etc. I also enjoyed that Mr. Howey did not reveal how this zombie "infection" started...leaving some mystery is fun. The only thing I didn't like is the abrupt end....there was no conclusion! With that said.....Mr. Howey....please tell me there is a sequel and it is coming soon?????? I need to know where this shuffle is going and what kind of havoc they are going to cause! Are they going to leave NYC? Are the doctors going to do something to Darnell? What happened to Carmen's baby? So many unanswered questions.....[a:Hugh Howey|3064305|Hugh Howey|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1327581631p2/3064305.jpg]

The premise of the story is completely original: what if trapped inside the zombies, there are still human minds totally aware of the terrible things their bodies are doing, and completely helpless to stop them, to stop themselves. It is heartbreaking.

Not your usually zombie book. At all.

Trigger warning: there's a lot of gore involved, but I think that as the zombies are aware of it and are experiencing and sharing it with you, the reader, it turns up being much less gratuitous than you might think, certainly much less gratuitous than in most zombie stories.

This book was like a group of short stories of several characters who become zombies. I love how Mr. Howey can change from one character to another believably and was interested in what each character experienced, how they accepted their fate, and the horrors they experienced. I would not recommend this book to the squeamish as it is full of gore and unpleasantness.

If you want to think about what it would be like to be a zombie, this may be the book for you! Otherwise, it's quite a drab exercise, entirely lacking in plot. Like the zombies inside it, reading is drudgery.

As a zombie story and good book in general this one is up there with WWZ. It tells touching stories out of a New York City zombie outbreak. Each person, now trapped in their dead zombie bodies, tells the story of a life in which they were trapped in some other way, in which they mindlessly fed in some other way. It's heartbreaking, it's shocking, it's bloody and violent. It's another wonderful piece of work from Hugh Howey.

Interesting concept about the consciousness of a zombie, but the bad language was excessive- to the point that it was a distraction that took away from the story.

This was a very difficult book to finish - not because it was poorly written but because of the unremitting despair and futility of the characters and their stories. I tagged it "unique mechanic'because the POV is from the zombie side (expect for a rare case or two). For me, it was amazing how much it changed the feel and weight of the story.
The book contains several major parts, each focusing on a specific zombie or group of zombies and how they arrived at their present state. It's this backstory that caused the horror and despair for me and is a fantastic way to tell the story of a zombie outbreak in New York City.
Highly recommended for Howey/zombie fans but NOT for the easily squeamish or those who like happy endings.

Interesting at first but becomes extremely repetitive. No character development, plot goes nowhere. Too hopeless to so much as be interesting. Overall a drag but not in a compelling way.
