A challenging, but ultimately worthwhile, book. I had difficulty getting into it, but fortunately, because my mother claims this trilogy as some of the best writing she has ever read, I forced myself to keep going until things picked up, which they did about as violently as possible. Bell is an excellent writer and storyteller. At some point I will have to read the other two volumes and satisfy my curiosity about the world he has brought to life.

the prose was eloquently written. the glossary and historical timeline in the rear came in handy. i was engaged from beginning to end. in fact i had to force myself to stop reading the book so i could stop being consumed by it. a month before the earthquake i decided to read madison smartt bell's triology. i read the farming of bones and as soon as this book became available i drove into it. i think i'm in love with haiti

It was just too slow and gruesome for me. I can see why someone would enjoy it but I'm too impatient a reader.
