Another amazing story by Ms. Kostova. Her stories are long but worth every carefully chosen word.

I’m 57 pages into a 600 page book and for two pages straight NOTHING has happened. A guy arrived at a location. That’s it. In the entire book the following has happened “painter attacked painting was interned in a psych ward, one psychologist referred the case to another because he ‘can make a stone talk’ and is interested in art as well. There are some “mysterious” French letters involved and the painter keeps drawing the same woman over and over. Psychologist reached out to ex wife to talk to her about painter.” That’s it, that’s 57 pages of reading

There was a whole chapter the psychologist dude went to the museum to look at the attacked painting and I could tell you nothing about the value of that chapter. It added nothing, absolutely nothing to the plot, except to say the psychologist is a bit of a perv because his grown self was attracted to minors😶 it’s honestly lowkey putting me in a reading slump. And the writing style is so uninspired.  A lot of adjectives and yet it’s not visually rich at all. The author is telling me things, or the psychologist is, but I can hardly see what he is seeing or doing, except when he was sexualizing the minor…sooo 📖🗑️

An impactful book. Characters are really well developed and engaging. At times I found it slow going, as there is a lot of back story here and there. This is definitely not a fast-paced story! But by the end, I didn't mind as I felt so immersed in the world of paintings, artists, and the two different eras. I feel so inspired to draw and paint, despite my lack of experience. Beautiful book.

AN ABSOLUTE GEM. I adored this book - couldn't put it down. Rich language and art history. A work of art.

Loved it! Another book about psychiatrists (there may be a theme to what I read...), but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Now, that being said, I think the psychiatrist in the story may need some help with working on boundaries.

this book is not The Historian. It does, however, go into what I would consider a lot of detail about art and painting. It also throws in an historical hidden romance, and why someone would attack a painting.
so, i have come away from the reading (listening) with a somewhat greater appreciation for paintings and brushstrokes, although i am far frmo undersatnding them.
