Raw. Insightful. No better behind-the-scenes book about late night exists, maybe. So good you can't get it on ebook because there's no way they can get the names on here past legal.

I wasn't sure what to make of this book. I think I expected something funnier, but this is a wry telling of her career path, which was dominated by men and male egos. It has some dry humour but it wasn't the laugh-a-minute Joan Rivers I expected. More fool me, this book is actually deep! It features some pretty raw emotion and gave me some insight into the struggles of making it into and remaining in the "in crowd." I don't know if Joan really intended to highlight how male dominated the industry was (is?), she certainly didn't phrase it as a complaint, but it really stood out to me that just to be considered alongside male comics, she had to be everything they were and more. I'm a stingy reviewer, so three stars indicates I didn't waste my time, just "liked" it instead of loving it. I'll always love Joan Rivers though. Rest in peace, you star.

I think if you like Joan Rivers, you can't help but like this book - particularly if you listen to the audio version, as I did. I loved listening to her. It's not that it's a funny book, because it isn't. And it didn't matter. Her take on herself and her trials in life seemed very honest and true and un-whiny. She might have been a harsh comic, but it doesn't show here. She even breaks down a bit in some moments, especially when talking about one of the biggest and saddest subjects of the book, her husband Edgar's suicide. Unfortunately it seems that only an abridged version is available from Audible - I was a little sad when it was over.

I bloody love Joan and this book was just superb. She is completely honest and alongside the expected humour, doesn't shy away from going over the really difficult and emotional times she's expirienced. Highly recommended for any fan, especially if you can listen to the audio version which she reads herself.
