When poets ask me where they should start, I offer them [b:Letters to a Young Poet|46199|Letters to a Young Poet|Rainer Maria Rilke|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1321994947l/46199._SY75_.jpg|1208289] for motivation, some modern and classic poems, and The Book of Forms. I sort of cobbled this book together from my experience as a freshman in college and have continued adding to it, but had I encountered it early from the advice of my older time traveling self, I would have told me, "Try every form in this book. And then do it again. And then do it once more. Then change subject matter and do it again."
