A story with characters kids will enjoy reading about, suspense that will keep them reading, and a book that gives you hope that there will be another! A student checked it out and within 2 days was back, finished with the book, telling me how much he liked it!

This is the National Treasure adventure kids edition. Adventure, friendship, and American history all wrapped in one. Fast paced and diverse characters make this appealing to a wide audience of readers.

Within the first two chapters, a major crime has already been committed. We know the how, but not the who. Throughout the story, some creative and intelligent children work to find the culprit. Anna, a budding young journalist, Henry, a serious gamer, and José, the Harry Potter expert, team up and provide plenty of humor and adventure for the reader. It is difficult to find engaging and sufficiently complicated mysteries at this reading level so this definitely fills a niche. Mid to upper elementary students will get a kick out of this one with a character named Senator Snickerbottom (made me giggle every time I saw it), art thieves, many great action scenes, and a tricky mystery to solve. Kate Messner has written another winner.

I read this to my son as it one of the IA Children's Choice Awards this year. It was okay, a little repetitive (not literally but many scenes and conversations seemed remarkably similar) and a bit slow at times.

That said, I am obviously not the target demographic for this. My son wanted to finish it, but it didn't capture his attention the way his favorite books have.

What a fun read! My fifth graders will love this - there is something for every one! Anna is the "nerd" who wants to be a journalist, Henry is addicted to video games and Jose LOVES Harry Potter - together they find that they have a connection to a secret society and solve the mystery of the stolen Star-Spangled Banner. I also enjoyed Sinan's struggles with the English language and the notebook he maintains to help him understand American figurative language.
I highly recommend this book for intermediate and middle school students!

My kids at school will love this one! The mix of history and suspense is great! I can see sequels coming and will be rushing out to get them! Great story!

Way too preposterous. There was one plot twist I liked, but the whole thing was just too far-fetched and heavy handed for me. Sure, a presidential candidate would come up with such a scheme? And such a stereotype as he? Jose and his dad were preparing to leave town, even though the mom was in "custody" as a suspect? Makes you wonder about how your baggage is treated. I liked the idea of the snowstorm, Hammurabi as a name for a dog (and how would a dog be allowed to run loose in an airport as long as he was?) And they would wait to check luggage until it was in Vermont? I'm surprised all of these 7th graders lacked cell phones, as well. I like the idea of escapist fiction for kids, perhaps emulating some adult action-packed mysteries, but this didn't do it for me.
