First of all, I have to aske myself where the frick have I been with this series!? And how did I not even try and attempt these back in the 90's when I was growing up? We've had all of these except for book Z which I actually recently ordered through thriftbooks online so I'm now excited to get it!

I decided to try for a new year book reading resolution by reading kids' novels/books to get an idea for what might be fun reads for young kids since I've had rarely some people I know it seems asking for some book recommendations for their kids at different ages. And while running on my treadmill listening to an audiobook, I saw this series that's been on our shelf for years and I don't know if they've ever been read, and yet, look like they might have been used maybe because of time.

Anyway, I needed an excuse to somehow start this first book/series and break the ice and I found my window of opportunity and read it out loud to my cousins' 8 year old little girl in one sitting and while getting our lunch ready hahaha. But it was such a cute and fun read, later on, I sort of figured part of it out, but as usual with murder/mystery books, there's always that one twist that you don't see coming and yet, so much fun. This book is a great way to not only get kids acquainted with this genre, but can help them even perhaps solve the mystery. Times once in a while I would stop reading and talk it through with my cousin's little girl and we'd come up with some ideas/theories and it was fun. Now I'm wanting to bring the next book to their apartment next time I come over in a couple of weeks and read it to her. I now can't wait myself to finish this series on my own even though I'm almost 30 in a few weeks hahaha. But it also doesn't hurt to try some of these books for my future kids and maybe find myself wanting to read these to them one day.

It's been about a decade and a half since I first read this book, but I'm glad I finally got around to rereading it. While the plot was not a shocker, for a children's mystery it had enough surprises and cute characters to keep me engaged.

Word of caution: these children speak far more freely to strangers and roam around their town without supervision far more than is safe for even a small city. I wouldn't worry about it too much, but if you're recommending it to young reader, it's something to keep in mind.

I read this with my lowest reading group. I honestly found it a little boring. Even though I didn’t find it exciting, the group did. They begged to read the next one in the series, and several of them have started other mysteries in the series (because reading order in this series is irrelevant). At the end of the day, the goal is to get kids excited about reading so I’m thankful this series has jump started that excitement for some of my students.

The character names drove me nuts for some reason but my kids begged for more every night when we had to stop for bedtime

Isaac (7) was incredibly invested in this mystery.

**all read aloud ratings (so far) are Isaac’s.

These are so fun! My 9 year old and I are listening to this as audio books in the car every day. We are constantly running around together on errands or to Girl Scout events.

These are a great easy way to give us something to listen to besides me trying to skip past the most recent Kesha song (ugh!) or completely inappropriate DJ banter.

I think so far this one has been my favorite. I love mysteries, so as a adult it's easy to spot "who done it"

but for my 9 year old, this one completely surprised her. And has really started her love for this series.

A really good story, and the ending is a little unexpected!
