Quite funny to read but not something I think I would return to. Maybe just for reference points about the history of drug culture.

I discovered the existence of this book when I was reading "Paradis artificiels" by Charles Baudelaire. This latter had commented and translated some passages of De Quincey's text, and it was sooo interesting. Therefore I eventually read the original work and I am so glad with it, though I struggled a little bit at the beginning because the sentences are quite long and there are a lot of digression. Nevertheless the author's writing style is amazingly beautiful, and his life is absolutely stunning. What's more, the content is food for thoughts. I simply adored it.

This was not what I expected as the title made me thought I would just be reading the drugged adventures of an english man. But it was better than what I expected as we get a very clumsy mind severely affected by the years of consuming opium describing a society unknown to us from his own perspective dtarting from his homeless situation to his adicction.

Ranked Book 14 (out of 15) of my holiday reads - August 2020
BOOK 34 (OF 100) OF THE 100 PENGUIN CLASSICS TO READ BEFORE YOU DIE
Pugs before drugs, guys - 2*
I can see why it's on the 100 Penguin Classics list but omg this made me yawn. I've done it though!

I read this ages ago so it's a vague memory of voice and style that delivers these 4 stars.
