Mixed feelings here. At first I found it hard to believe it was written in 1903, but the casual, unquestioned cruelty to 'fallen women' showed the age of the novel. Still, it was a quick, interesting read and definitely the originator of the eventual explosion of Scandinavian crime fiction.
