This book is a sequel to "Mira in the Present Tense", which I did not know before reading. It does stand alone. Mira travels to India to find visit her family there, whom she has never met in person before (although they do Skype.) In Kolkata, she gets closer to her family, unravels secrets, and discovers things about herself. I think it is open for a sequel (or, at least I wanted to know more about the romantic resolution.)

Much better than I thought it would be and very captivating and mysterious in some parts.

Like Artichoke Hearts, the previous book in the series, this is a thought-provoking and kind story about a young girl growing up and figuring out what matters to her. Mira feels things deeply and has an insatiable curiosity about the world and her place in it. I loved the complexity of her relationship with her family’s history and language, and I loved her evolving ideas about art and its purpose. I loved the book’s exploration of the ways people can hurt people they love through lack of understanding, and the ways different generations see the world.
