I fell in love with the beginning of this book, but the author lost me when he rolled out all the football essays. I'm giving it 3.75 stars rounded up to 4. Would easily have been 4.5 if not for the football segment.

Can I call myself a true Southerner if I didn't know who Rick Bragg was prior to picking up this book? For someone who loves memoir essays, this was a gem of a find. He took me to places in the South that I knew and places I didn't know, as a friendly, intelligent, thoughtful guide disguised as a self-described redneck.

Perfection. This was my first Rick Bragg book but it will not be my last. I want to read everything he's written, but only if he'll read to me. I'm sure I would have loved this book had I read it, but listening to Bragg himself read the audiobook added another wonderful layer. You may be momentarily tempted to hit the 2X button on your audio narration but please resist. Bragg's slow southern drawl is calming & necessary. He writes with such love of his native south, it's charming & hilarious. The only story I didn't care for & ended up skipping was one about Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide. If you're not an Alabama fan you've heard more than enough about the glories of Alabama these past few years.

This is fascinating, poignant collection of Rick Bragg's essays. Every time I read his work, I'm awed by his style and how he is grounded by place. In short, a great read.

There is such good stuff in this book, I need to come back and write a proper review after some thoughts.

An entertaining and informative collection of essays about growing up in the South and living a life in the southern states. Very enjoyable.

This book was absolutely delightful and transplanted me in the south every time I listened to it - and listening to it was a key to it's perfection. THe author, Rick Bragg, reads the audio version and his accent and drawl are the perfect icing on this literary cake. His vignettes describe the charms and follies of the South in a most endearing way. I do have to admit that I did skip through a few of the football stories, but otherwise, every chapter had me smiling nearly every minute and often laughing outloud. His with and sarcasm are irresistible. I definitely recommend this, although because there isn't one long story line, I did get a little fatigued at the end.
