This book is creepy! I started to suspect the truth about halfway through, but it still completely weirded me out when it came to fruition.

Holy crap! CREEPY, CREEPY, CREEPY! I never would have figured this book to end or be like it was after reading the summary of the book. I feel like I can't even put into words right now because I'm kind of overwhelmed by the book. This book reminded me of Mean Girls and Heathers and another movie that I can't think of right now.

Although this book is one of the shorter books that I have read this year but boy does it have serious "punch" with it. I read another shorter book like this one this year but this one soars past the other one. I was kept guessing throughout the book and kept me wanting to read and finish the book. Some of the storyline was predictable but I never guessed the ending of the story!

I felt bad for Cara throughout the book because I probably wouldn't have handled the whole "choker" incident as well as she did but overall, I wish she would have stood up to "Zoe".

I can't wait to recommend this book to my students who want a suspenseful read!

I am a HUGE fan of happy endings and I must say, despite LOVING this book and how everything came together - creepy as can be or not... I ended up feeling SO sad over Cara and Ethan. ESPECIALLY poor, sweet Ethan.

Ethan's overwhelming sadness in reaction to finally piecing everything together was a like a punch in the gut, especially when Cara is yelling for him as she's being taken away... Why, oh why, could they not have their happy ending??

Then that very final chapter... the loneliness and dreariness... so haunting. There are just no winners in this story at all... well, other than Zoe, I guess.

This book was a rollercoaster of emotions. At first i wasnt sure if I'd enjoy it because I'm typically more of a romance girly. But this book had me hooked. Even though I thought I knew hoe it was goona end, it didn't end the same way. It was a 10/10 and i totally recommend it!!

I already knew how this story would develop, but it still was really enthralling.

I didn't really know what it was about, but after reading reviews from a few GoodReads friends I knew I had to read it as well.

The character development was amazing. I could emphasize with Cara, although I already could see the big picture and Cara couldn't.

It had this really creepy atmosphere that built up pretty quickly.

And the ending. It was just creepiness galore.

Read my review of this in portuguese: http://controversialwords.com/2013/12/20/choker-elizabeth-woods/
I hardly ever rate a book anything lower than three stars but I could not let this pass as a three star. I thought that the whole idea of the story was really interesting but poorly written. I found myself yawning through a good chunk of it, it was all so predictable and oh let's not get started on the stereotypes that are present here. The characters weren't as well developed as I would have liked, the protagonist was just so meh. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, honestly, too hyped up. Did not live up to my expectations at all.

Ever since Cara’s family moved when she was in middle school, she’s been a loner. That’s because when they moved, they left behind her one friend in the entire world, Zoe. Zoe’s a trouble-maker who has a troubled life, but without her Cara just doesn’t feel like she can do anything. Now she’s being teased mercilessly in high school, and her older, lawyer parents don’t spend nearly enough time with her. Just when everything looks like it will never get any better, Zoe appears in Cara’s room. She’s run away, because she’s done something really bad, but Cara doesn’t care. Suddenly, Cara begins to have enough confidence to flirt with her crush, and to change up her personal style. There’s more to Zoe, though. Bad things start to happen, and Cara grows more and more frightened of her friend as she realizes she may be the cause.

Choker is a good, high school thriller of a story. The book opens with a flashback of Zoe and Cara as children, and immediately we are introduced to Zoe’s dangerous nature. Cara is harshly ridiculed at school for stuff that comes across as not being her fault–we’ve all been there, right? Instantly, shy and awkward, Cara becomes a character that we can empathize with (although I can see how her mousy demeanor might annoy some readers). Cara’s parents come across as very absent and totally clueless to what is happening in their daughter’s life. Woods also succeeds in painting Zoe as both a charismatic and utterly repulsive character.

There is a twist to the story, but I won’t give it away here. I feel like the writing was fairly well-done as far as the plot goes, but I was still able to pick up on the clues and guess what was going on by about page 70. That’s not to say the book wasn’t enjoyable anyway–it was. I had a lot of fun watching how things unraveled, and seeing how I was so right all along.

Choker is an intense, fast-paced book that deals with teenage bullying, the pain of being an outcast, and the stress of modern high school life. It was the first 2011 I read this year, and it was not a disappointment. I expect more thrilling stories from Elizabeth Woods in the future.

This is more of a 1.5 star read for me. There was a thing it did that I really hated and I'm going to talk about it in a second. But it's spoilery. Even though I saw the twist coming from very early on in the book, it's not something that comes out until the end of the book.

Spoiler The character is mentally ill. She has some sort of alternate personality or hallucination sort of thing going on. Her friend who becomes increasingly more dangerous as the book goes on, is actually not real and it's really the main character who is doing all the terrible things.
I hate this trope. I hate it a lot. It also happens a lot so it's not shocking at all. And it's treated so badly most times it happens. It's used a plot twist and look how shocking this is. It implies mental illness is something Dangerous, especially with people who have problems with reality. It does a massive disservice to try and put this view into various media. And it's not that people who have mental illness can't be dangerous, or have symptoms that make them dangerous. It's that when they come up it's never addressed in any meaningful way. In Choker, Cara is just described as having had "psychiatric issues". There's no depth given to it at all. Like, I said it's there to be the plot point in a thriller rather than anything with meaning.
