It’s time to return to the World of Darkness, and it’s all thanks to a new comic series from Vault. Vampire: The Masquerade #1 begins two stories from this foreboding world. It’s everything that fans have been waiting for.

It seems like stories from World of Darkness are suddenly popping up all over the place. First, there was that short story audio compilation, and now a comic series! As a huge fan of the RPGs, I couldn’t be happier about that fact. I know I’m not the only one feeling that way.

These two stories are already proving to be steeped in the lore than fans (myself included) love so much. The first tale follows a courier, and the second an Anarch coterie. Talk about variety!

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an eCopy in exchange for an honest review.

Before I read this, I didn't know that this was based on a tabletop role playing game. I have zero knowledge of the game but as far as I can tell that didn't impede my understanding of the story.

This single volume impressively packs a lot in it. There's lots going on with world-building, character introductions, different vampiric factions, and political dynamics. But all of it is done in such a way that I didn't find it confusing. Everything was also well-incorporated into the story that there are no huge information text dumps.

The political landscape of the Twin Cities was fascinating to read. I loved getting a glimpse of where the different factions fit. I think I'm most looking forward to seeing more of the nosferatu and how the political transition will play out.

As much as I loved the world-building and the politics, I think the strength of the story still lies with the characters. The are quite a few characters, which can be difficult to work with, but enough of their personalities came through in their limited number of scenes that I found I was able to connect with most of them. I am looking forward to getting to know them more in the next volumes. I'm especially curious about how Cecily and Ali's relationship will develop.

Vampire The Masquerade: Winter's Teeth volume 1 is a dark and rich vampiric read filled with dynamic characters and political intrigue that will leave you wanting to more.

Excellent start to the series!

Doesn't do a lot of hand holding for those who might not be as familiar with the setting, which is nice for long time fans of VtM like myself. Love the setup and the characters are intriguing. Dialogue feels nicely written, and the art is lovely!

Much stronger writing than the first issue. This one comes with more city lore and blank character sheets for you to photocopy too! I love that this series gets you reacquainted with the RPG’s world, without feeling too mechanical. Makes me want to search for a one-shot I could GM!
