For everyone who thinks the refugees are the problem, who only read the one-sided version of events in the media or who still think boys are only entitled to education; read this book.

Despite being just brief glimpses into the experiences of these girls, there are more gruesome stories in this book than I ever hope to experience. The resilience and strength of these women, fleeing their homes and building a new life elsewhere is remarkable. It is often overlooked that the people who flee whatever situation are not just looking for 'luck' elsewhere, but also leave a lot behind. Not just their belonings, family and friends, but also a little bit of themselves.

Recommended to all, and despite the experiences being very different to mine, it felt very relatable to someone growing up with mixed heritage.

Everyone should read this book - fact! Anyone who thinks that refugees leave their homes, jobs, families etc out of choice, or make extremely dangerous illegal boarder crossing unnecessarily needs to read this book. The heart ache and loss these displaced people go through, not really fitting in anywhere, not having a place to call home… it is eye opening and humbling.

One of the exerts is from a lady called Jennifer who sums it up brilliantly when she said she didn’t realise how privileged she is until she supported a displaced family who couldn’t believe how much water their new home in the USA had and were fascinated watching popcorn in the microwave.

The only reason it’s 4 not 5 stars is that it only skims the surface, you could probably write a whole book each on the experiences of the girls and women who give us a small window into their displacement. I now can’t wait to read I Am Malala!
