A Return to Common Sense: How to Fix America Before We Really Blow It by Leigh McGowan (Politics Girl) is a basic guide to how our country works. It's a Civics 101 class that will tell you exactly what the vice president's job description is along with all other facets of the government. McGowan addresses such problems as the electoral college, gerrymandering, the filibuster, and the Supreme Court. It is a very timely book that everyone needs to read. I highly recommend this book!

Thanks to NetGalley and Atria/One Signal Publishers for the advanced digital copy of the book.

Leigh McGowan has done her research and is giving Americans a lesson on our own government! This book perfectly defines how our government works, is run and the history behind it. Leigh also looks at what we need to do going forward to ensure we don't go backward. We learn about government in high school and this is the perfect read for every American adult.

I greatly appreciate Leigh's dedication and in-depth knowledge even more so because she was born in Canada...Leigh chose America as her country and has educated herself. That is absolutely commendable and I appreciate all of the information she consistently provides online and in this book.

Clearly well researched and a wonderful refresher for those of us who are [ahem… many] years removed from our last civics class.

I listened to the audio book and appreciated the author reading in her voice and tone. Great read for anyone who is interested in learning more about our government systems and how current day politics exists around these systems. I learned things I didn't know and appreciated how she tied her explanations of how government works with modern examples of how these things work (or don't). If you are interested in challenging yourself, check this one out- and I highly encourage people to think deeper or harder about areas that you find yourself disagreeing with to find out why.

I really like PoliticsGirl; I watch her podcast on YouTube. Originally, I appreciated her ability to break down all the political hot topics of the moment, sometimes via her own opinions and sometimes via interviews with political figures. But in the past six months, she, along with Leeja Miller and [a:Stacey Abrams|17274107|Stacey Abrams|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1526832396p2/17274107.jpg], has become an anchor for my sanity. When I feel overwhelmed and panicky about where the country is headed, I listen to her and I'm rerouted to feeling like fighting, like caring instead of like curling up in a corner with a blanket over my head.

I had wanted to check this out when it was released in September but, as you might imagine, there were holds. I got it after the election and her warnings now seem a little more dire, like not enough people read and believed this book and, therefore, made choices that are going to bite us all in the ass.

While McGowan has a liberal bias and doesn't try to hide it, she's also empathetically understanding toward the reason we find ourselves on the precipice of handing everything over to a few overly wealthy people and the American version of the Taliban.

This book is less a tirade on why Democrats are the ones who can save democracy (they're not and they haven't) and more a reminder of how the American government is supposed to work and the outcomes we're supposed to see when it works like it's supposed to. It's a reminder that We, the People still have power and if we choose to assert it, we may be able to keep it.

Even if you're well-versed in what we called Civics when it was a school course, everything in here is a good refresher and some of the deep dives are interesting and timely.

This is an excellent overview of how the government is supposed to work. If you ever find yourself confused by the political environment, this is a great place to start.
