Note: occasional usage of slurs that were unfortunately common in 1918. It can be seen as a sort of time capsule. A handful of the stories have deep emotional resonance, a handful are jarring or offensive to modern readers, but all are interesting to read through a contextual lens. Edna Ferber had an observant eye and witty touch to even difficult topics.
